Marriage is not a man-made contract but a sacred ordinance from Allah and the foundation of the family. Allah ordained marriage as the lawful union through which humanity continues and the natural needs of men and women are met. Married life brings order, peace and contentment of the soul. Allah says: “And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you love and mercy.” (Surah Ar-Rum, verse 21)
Marriage is a Sunnah of the prophets and messengers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Marriage is my Sunnah. Whoever does not act on my Sunnah is not of me. Marry, for I will take pride in the number of my Ummah on the Day of Judgment.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, hadith 1846)
The Prophet encouraged those who can afford it to marry at the right time. Through marriage a person lowers the gaze and, by guarding chastity, eases the path to Paradise. The Messenger of Allah said: “O young people, whoever among you is able to marry should marry, for it restrains the gaze and guards chastity.” (Sahih Bukhari, hadith 5066)
Marrying once one is able to is best. Many people are curious about marriage, and some ask whether Allah has already decided who will marry whom, or whether that can change through one’s deeds.
The companion Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Allah recorded the destiny of every person 50 years before He created the heavens and the earth, and whatever He has written for someone will happen.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, from Sahih Muslim, hadith 79)
Another hadith says that one day the companions asked the Prophet whether they should rely on destiny alone and give up good deeds. He replied: “Keep doing good deeds, for each person will find easy the deeds for which he was created. For those among the fortunate, the deeds of the fortunate are made easy, and for those among the wretched, the deeds of the wretched are made easy.” (Sahih Bukhari, hadith 4949)
Islamic scholars say that, like birth and death, marriage is also predetermined and written in a person’s taqdir, or destiny. One will marry the person written for them in their destiny. What is written in destiny can also be changed through dua, or supplication.
However hard one tries, one cannot marry someone unless it is written in destiny or ordained by Allah. Everything rests with Allah, and what He wills will happen.
If a person wishes to marry someone, they should make lawful efforts and also pray to Allah for that person. Destiny changes through supplication. The Messenger of Allah said: “Nothing changes destiny except supplication.” (Sunan Tirmidhi, hadith 2139)
Answering a question on YouTube, Sheikh Ahmadullah, chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation, said: “Allah has decided who will marry whom. The hadith of the Messenger of Allah also give clear guidance on this.”
