Muggings, robberies and lawlessness have risen sharply across Dhaka, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president Sadik Kayem has said plainly. Dhaka residents are now afraid to go out at night, he said, and this incident makes it very clear under whose patronage the lawlessness is happening.

Sharing an image of a news report headlined “Former Chhatra Dal leader Pavel, seen with a rifle beside Ishraque, has no gun licence”, he wrote in a post on his verified Facebook account on Monday: “Why does a state minister have such a stockpile of weapons despite having government security? What are these weapons used for? Is extortion money collected from businesspeople by threatening them with these weapons?”
