A Dhaka court has rejected a bail plea from Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, a former MP and freedom fighter, in a case accusing him of obstructing officials on duty and mistreating staff at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court rejected the plea on Monday after a hearing.

His bail plea in the same case was first rejected on October 4. He was brought to court that day at the end of a one-day remand, and his lawyer applied for bail. After the hearing, the court rejected the plea and ordered him sent to jail.

Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on October 2, accused of causing disorder over luggage and trolleys at Shahjalal airport, obstructing officials on duty and physically assaulting a security officer. Md Shahriar Alam Sajib, a security officer at the airport, filed the case with Airport police station.

After the arrest, the investigating officer sought five days’ remand. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir granted one day after a hearing.

According to the case, 34 Jamaat-e-Islami delegates returned to Dhaka from Medina with their family members on October 1. Their flight landed at Dhaka airport at 8:55am. After immigration, the passengers went to belt 8 to collect their luggage.

The complaint says the rush of passengers caused a temporary shortage of trolleys and long queues, and that some protocol assistants tried to take trolleys without waiting in line. It also says some passengers became agitated and behaved improperly over delays in getting their luggage and not receiving their Zamzam water.

The case brings charges under several sections of the Penal Code.
