Security has been tightened in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency to keep law and order normal around its by-election.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed for the election. BGB has already deployed 21 platoons in the constituency to make sure voting is peaceful and fair.
Colonel Mohammad Suruj Mia, commander of the BGB’s Thakurgaon sector, confirmed this at a press briefing on Monday morning (26 October).
Describing the tighter security, officials said special checkpoints have been set up at key locations and entry points alongside regular patrols. Modern technology is also being used to prevent any untoward incident during the election and to curb crime: drone cameras, body-worn cameras for law enforcement and a specially trained dog squad.
Lieutenant Colonel Kh. Akhlakur Rahman, commander of 50 BGB, and other senior BGB officers were also present at the briefing.
Under the schedule, voting in the Thakurgaon-1 by-election will be held on 29 October. Those involved expressed hope that, with close watch by the Election Commission and law enforcement and the BGB’s extensive preparations, voters will be able to cast their votes in a neutral, free and peaceful environment.
