Shamima Sultana, a professor of Bangla at Jahangirnagar University (JU) and director of its Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, has been appointed a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The appointment was announced on Sunday (25 October) in a notification signed by Al-Bashirul Islam, senior assistant secretary of the contract and foreign appointments branch of the Ministry of Public Administration.

According to the notification, the President made the appointment under Article 138(1) of the Constitution. Under its terms, she must give up any other profession or business and any existing employment with government, semi-government or private institutions or organisations.

Under Article 139(1) of the Constitution, she will hold the post for five years from the date she takes office or until she turns 65, whichever comes first.

Professor Shamima Sultana drew attention on 1 August 2024 when she removed a portrait of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina from her office. She was chair of JU’s Bangla department at the time. A photograph of her sitting in her office later spread on social media; it showed a portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the wall behind her, but none of Sheikh Hasina.
