Police will not hold back from “crossfire” if needed, should the government approve it, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir said on Monday, 26 October. “Crossfire” is the term long used in Bangladesh for killings of suspects in what law enforcers describe as gunfights.

He was speaking at the formal launch of Community Bank’s Islamic banking service in Chawkbazar.

“Police are needed for people to live in peace and happiness,” the IGP said. “But having freedom does not mean one can do whatever one likes.”

Urging people not to take the law into their own hands, he said it was also wrong to put the blame on police at every turn.

He also spoke of the spread of drugs in neighbourhoods and of allegations that the ousted Awami League, as well as some members of the police, are involved in the drug trade.

The IGP said 27 police members had been dismissed in the past two months.
