A helicopter fighting wildfires in Indonesia crashed into a river while collecting water on Borneo island on 8 November. Two crew members were rescued, but one is missing.
An official gave the details to the news agency AFP. The crash happened in South Kalimantan province. It is the second crash of a firefighting helicopter in a few days: on 4 November a military helicopter crashed into coastal waters off Borneo, killing three people.
Barton Panjaitan, spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency, said the two Australian nationals who survived the 8 November crash are safe. The helicopter’s third crew member, an Indonesian national, is missing.
Dramatic video footage shows the helicopter slowly descending after scooping water from the Barito river with a bucket, then plunging nose-first into the water.
Indonesia, the Southeast Asian island nation, has been fighting severe wildfires for months. Fires have spread across large areas of Sumatra, Borneo and Papua, and the thick smoke has drifted into neighbouring Malaysia, East Timor and Singapore.
Of the 8 November crash, spokesman Barton said it happened while the fleet was carrying out water-bombing operations to put out the fires.
