Defaulted loans at the country’s six state-owned banks total 147,776.36 crore taka, with Janata Bank PLC accounting for the largest share among them. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury shared the figures, based on data as of June 30.
The finance minister shared the information Sunday (Sept. 6) in the third session of parliament, in response to a question from Bagerhat-4 lawmaker Md. Abdul Alim.
The information was presented during the question-and-answer session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal.
Lawmaker Md. Abdul Alim had asked about the current volume of defaulted loans at the country’s state-owned banks and a bank-wise breakdown.
In response, the finance minister said that, as of June 30, 2026, total defaulted loans at the six state-owned banks — Agrani Bank PLC, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC, BASIC Bank PLC, Janata Bank PLC, Rupali Bank PLC and Sonali Bank PLC — stood at 147,776.36 crore taka.
By bank, defaulted loans at Agrani Bank PLC stand at 29,029.67 crore taka.
At Bangladesh Development Bank PLC, they stand at 888.79 crore taka; at BASIC Bank PLC, 8,131.09 crore taka; at Janata Bank PLC, 75,396.67 crore taka; at Rupali Bank PLC, 19,281.74 crore taka; and at Sonali Bank PLC, 15,048.39 crore taka.
Among the six state-owned banks, Janata Bank PLC has the highest volume of defaulted loans, the finance minister said.
