Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian criticised the double standards of Western countries in his address to the UN General Assembly. He said Israel remains beyond international accountability despite possessing nuclear weapons, while Iran faces regular inspections and sanctions.
Trust cannot be built through words alone, Pezeshkian told the General Assembly; it requires abandoning “double standards” in international affairs.
Israel holds nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction in the region, he said, yet it is Iran’s nuclear facilities that inspectors are demanding to see.
Pezeshkian also said Israel has killed 70,000 people in Gaza, and that Iran was bombed while it was still at the negotiating table.
The Iranian president said Israel has nuclear weapons, has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has never in its history allowed international inspectors into the country.
Even so, he said, Israel is given billions of dollars’ worth of weapons free of charge and enjoys complete impunity to bomb any capital it chooses.
Describing the current geopolitical situation as a “tragic contradiction”, Pezeshkian said: “I say it again: the nuclear bombs are in Israel, but the inspectors are in Iran. Israel kills, and Iran is sanctioned.”
