Eight people, five of them with gunshot wounds, have been injured in a clash between two sides over local dominance and a previous dispute in Kalia upazila, Narail, according to reports. One person has been detained for questioning.
The incident took place at about 9am on Wednesday (September 23) in the Charkandipara area of ward 2 of Kalabaria union parishad, under Naragati police station in the upazila.
Initial reports say Israfil Sikder, Rasel Sheikh, Motiur Rahman, Mukti Sheikh and Hasan Sheikh were shot.
Police and the injured said tension between the groups of the Charkandipara union council member, Md Sohel, and Abed turned into a clash in the morning over local dominance and a previous dispute. Eight people on both sides were injured in shooting and attacks, five of them with gunshot wounds.
The injured were first taken to the Kalia upazila health complex and, after first aid, sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Police have detained one person for questioning.
Naragati police officer-in-charge Md Hossain Ali said: “The clash took place between two sides in Charkandipara over a previous killing and over local dominance. I have heard that four people were injured by gunfire.”
He added: “A doctor will be able to confirm the gunshot wounds. What kind of weapons were used is being investigated. One person had been detained for questioning by Wednesday afternoon.”
