Garment exports earn $7.5 billion in first two months of fiscal year

Bangladesh earned roughly $7.5 billion from ready-made garment exports in the first two months of the 2026-27 fiscal year. That compares with $7.13 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year — an increase of $364.9 million, or 5.12%, over the year. Exports fell in July, but both knitwear and woven garments saw significant growth in August, keeping the sector in positive territory for the two-month period overall.

According to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, total garment export earnings for July-August of FY2026-27 stood at $7,495,610,000. In the same period of FY2025-26, earnings were $7,130,670,000 — a year-on-year increase of 5.12%.

Knitwear posted relatively stronger growth over the two-month period. Knit garment exports earned $4,193,760,000 in July-August, compared with $3,949,860,000 in the same period of the previous fiscal year — growth of 6.17%, or roughly $243.9 million in additional earnings.

Woven garment exports also grew. Earnings from the sector reached $3,301,850,000 over the two months, up from $3,180,810,000 in the same period last fiscal year — an increase of 3.81%, or roughly $121 million, over the year. July, the first month of the fiscal year, saw a somewhat negative picture for garment exports: earnings that month were $3,886,720,000, compared with $3,962,650,000 in July of the previous year, a decline of 1.92%.

Knitwear exports in July totaled $2,150,900,000, down from $2,178,690,000 in the same month last year, a decline of 0.90%.

Woven garment exports in the same month totaled $1,727,660,000, compared with $1,783,960,000 in July 2025 — a decline of 3.16%. After July’s negative trend, garment exports improved significantly in August. Total export earnings that month reached $3,608,890,000, compared with $3,160,820,000 in August of last year — a year-on-year increase of 13.92%, or roughly $448.1 million.

Knitwear made the largest contribution to August’s growth. Knit garment export earnings that month reached $2,034,700,000, up from $1,771,170,000 in the same period of 2025 — growth of 14.88%, meaning the sector earned roughly $263.5 million more in a single month.

Woven garments also posted strong growth in August. Export earnings that month reached $1,574,190,000, compared with $1,396,850,000 in August of the previous year — a year-on-year increase of 12.70%, or roughly $177.3 million.

EPB figures show that both knitwear and woven garments are in positive territory for export growth in the first two months of the current fiscal year, with knitwear ahead in both growth rate and additional earnings. Of the total garment export earnings for July-August, $4,193,800,000 came from knitwear and $3,301,900,000 from woven garments, meaning knitwear’s contribution to total exports is comparatively larger.

Overall, total garment exports this fiscal year are up 5.12% compared with the same two-month period last fiscal year, with knitwear growth at 6.17% and woven at 3.81%. August’s strong growth played the biggest role in keeping the two-month overall figure positive.
