World-renowned country music star Dolly Parton has died. The singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist passed away on Aug. 25 at age 80 in Nashville, Tennessee.
In her final period, Dolly was battling cancer, a difficult illness. But she never made her condition public. According to her niece, Jada Starr, the singer kept her illness a secret to the end because she did not want to unnecessarily worry her family and loved ones.
Jada recently spoke about Dolly in an interview with “Extra,” sharing various memories of time spent with the late star. According to Jada, Dolly placed greater importance on her work and future plans than on her physical condition.
Jada said Dolly never wanted family members or acquaintances to worry because of her illness, which is why news of her death came as a major shock to her loved ones. Even in difficult times, Jada said, Dolly would urge them not to break down in tears but to return to their work and hold onto their love for one another.
In Jada’s words, Dolly was truly an extraordinary person — someone who kept her own pain hidden while thinking of others’ wellbeing.

A love for music from childhood
Dolly Parton was born on Jan. 19, 1946, into a poor farming family in Pittman Center, Tennessee. Her mother sang folk songs, and from that, Dolly developed a deep love of music in childhood. She began writing songs at just six years old, penning her first song about her favorite doll. At age eight, she picked up a guitar, and gradually began performing music locally.
At just 11, Dolly got the chance to perform on local radio. By age 13, she had reached the United States’ most prestigious country music stage. That marked the start of her long and colorful musical journey.
Over her long career, Dolly Parton built a distinct identity in music, acting, business and philanthropy. Her death has cast a shadow of grief not just over country music, but the entire entertainment world.
