Iran has presented a roadmap to the United States. The plan proposes a ceasefire of up to 60 days across the whole region, a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a timetable for wide-ranging talks to end the conflict. Iran’s proposal also includes a halt to attacks on its Arab neighbours.
Iranian officials in New York said there is still room for a diplomatic solution, but any agreement must take Iran’s demands into account. These include lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian officials said earlier that the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within seven days if the United States accepted Tehran’s conditions.
US secretary of state Marco Rubio has also said Washington remains open to the path of diplomacy, while keeping the possibility of military action on the table.
Both sides’ positions remain hard, and it is uncertain how much room there will be to reach an understanding through talks.
