Anwar courts Chinese high-tech investment for Malaysia

Malaysia has laid the foundation to grow further as a regional hub for high-value investment and manufacturing, thanks to its mature industrial base, skilled workforce, strategic location and strong supply chains, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has said. The government will support quality investment that brings technology transfer, develops local skilled workers, involves Malaysian companies and creates new jobs, he said.

Anwar made the remarks at a meeting organised to attract Chinese investment in high-technology sectors including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and semiconductors.

At a roundtable in Shanghai with representatives of 21 leading Chinese companies, potential investment was also discussed in AI and robotics, electric vehicles (EVs), battery materials, advanced optics, biotechnology, health care, specialty chemicals and advanced manufacturing. The Malaysian prime minister heard directly about Chinese firms’ plans for, and interest in, investing in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s investment, trade and industry minister Johari Abdul Ghani and transport minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook also took part in the meeting. Anwar is on a three-day official visit to China that is due to take in Shanghai and Hangzhou.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 years in a row. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $113.82 billion from January to August this year.
