A 38-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, following a dispute over her attending a dance class. The victim was identified as Yamini Krishna Lal Yadav.
Her 41-year-old husband, Krishna Lal Yadav, has been arrested in connection with the incident. The couple had two young children.
Police said Yamini died Thursday. On the day of the incident, Krishna Lal returned home from work and asked his wife to prepare food for him and the children. However, Yamini was at the time preparing to go to a dance class in their residential area. When she refused to cook, an argument broke out between the two, which at one point turned violent.
Police allege Krishna Lal was intoxicated at the time of the incident. He is accused of striking Yamini on the neck and abdomen in front of their two children. Yamini later complained of severe pain in her neck and abdomen and asked her husband to bring painkillers. Krishna Lal went to a shop to buy the medicine, but finding it closed, returned home without it.
Yamini’s physical condition then began to deteriorate. Her abdomen swelled due to severe internal injuries. She was later taken to the hospital, where she died during treatment.
Police initially recorded the incident as an unnatural death and sent the body for autopsy. But the autopsy report found that Yamini’s neck bone was fractured and her intestines severely damaged. Marks consistent with strangulation were also found on her neck.
The victim’s brother said the family initially believed Yamini’s death was a tragic accident. But after the autopsy report found evidence of severe injury and strangulation, police questioned her husband and later arrested him.
He told reporters that their sister had quarreled with her husband over various issues before as well. He said Yamini would sometimes tell the family about these disputes but would ask them not to intervene, fearing that family intervention could lead to further problems for her.
Police have filed a murder case against Krishna Lal Yadav under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
