At least 472 people have been killed and more than 1,500 remain missing as of Friday morning in the devastating flash flood that struck the Nepal-China border region. According to disaster management authorities, the death toll in Nepal alone has risen to 469, with 977 people missing there. In addition, 3,253 people have been rescued by helicopter, and more than 150 injured people have been admitted to hospitals in Kathmandu and elsewhere.
Meanwhile, at least three people have been killed and 558 remain missing in Tibet’s Gyirong county in China. Nepal’s tourism board and the foreign ministries of affected countries have published a detailed list of missing nationals from various countries. The news was reported by Guardian Online. Those missing include nationals of more than 30 countries: 288 from India, 90 from the United States, 55 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 39 from Australia and 33 from Britain.
According to the updated list, other missing nationals include 9 from Singapore, 8 from Germany and 8 from Russia (of whom two have been rescued). Also missing are 6 from South Africa, 6 from Latvia, 5 from Japan and 5 from New Zealand. Four French and four Spanish nationals are missing, according to Spain’s foreign ministry, though Nepal’s tourism board lists three.
Three Belgians, three Hungarians (according to Hungary’s foreign ministry, though Nepal’s board lists one) and three Portuguese nationals (one of whom has been found) are among the missing. Two Dutch, two Irish and two Kazakh nationals are also missing. Additionally, three Italians were reported missing, though border sources say two have been rescued. One national each from Belarus, Finland, Israel, Lithuania, the Philippines, Serbia and Sweden remains missing. One national each from Switzerland and Bulgaria has been rescued.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government has also released information on those rescued and missing at the China-Nepal border. Chinese authorities say 260 of those missing from their side of the border are foreign nationals, though no separate breakdown by specific nationality has been released. Nepal’s tourism board also said eight people whose nationalities have not yet been confirmed have been rescued alive.
