Jamaat wants MPO teachers eligible to run in local elections

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Golam Parwar has demanded the cancellation of the Election Commission’s rule disqualifying private-school (MPO) teachers from running in elections.

He made the demand while briefing reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin at the Election Building on Tuesday afternoon. Golam Parwar led the six-member delegation.

He said the rule violates articles 27 and 28 of the constitution. If it isn’t withdrawn, he said, it could face legal challenge. Roughly 30,000 MPO-listed teachers are currently employed.

He also requested that the government be informed to remove a member of BNP’s election management committee who has been appointed to the post of additional secretary at the Election Commission.
