A mobile court has jailed a man named Md Abdur Razzak, 45, during a special drive against bird poaching in Sherpur Sadar and Nakla upazilas.
The drive, organised by the district wildlife management and nature conservation division and the nature and environment group SHINE, ran for about six hours from dawn on Wednesday (September 23).
Razzak is the son of the late Suruj Ali of Adampur village in Ganapaddi union, Nakla.
During the drive, Razzak was caught in the area with three herons and heron-trapping equipment. A mobile court then sentenced him under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act to seven days’ simple imprisonment and a fine of 50 taka. The court was conducted by executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) Sadia Afrin Annie.
Eight hala, a kind of bird trap, and 12 herons were recovered in the drive. The herons were later released. Leaflets and stickers were also handed out to local people to raise awareness about protecting birds.
Sherpur wildlife and biodiversity conservation officer Suman Sarkar, wildlife ranger Md Abdullah Al Amin, and Md Mugniur Rahman Moni — founding president of the Sherpur Bird Club, executive director of SHINE and a senior journalist — took part in the drive along with volunteers and other members.
Suman Sarkar said the poacher had been sentenced by the mobile court and sent to jail. Drives of this kind against bird poaching will be carried out regularly, he said.
