Tada-U International Airport in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, was struck by a drone attack. The airport was shut down following Thursday’s attack and remained closed as of Friday.
State-run Myanmar Airways International confirmed the attack on its Facebook page. An official at the airline’s Bangkok office told Reuters that flights were cancelled because Tada-U airport was closed.
Myanmar’s state-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday that the pro-democracy armed political group People’s Defence Force (PDF) launched six first-person-view (FPV) suicide drones at Tada-U International Airport on Thursday.
The report said the attack disrupted the schedules of some domestic flights, but caused no casualties, and no vehicles or the airport runway were damaged.
Local Myanmar media reported that a military fighter jet had been stationed at Tada-U airport, and that it was the target of the drone strike.
Myanmar’s military seized power on February 1, 2021, ousting the government led by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Political unrest has continued in the country since. After nearly five years of military rule, elections were held in December 2025, and former army chief General Min Aung Hlaing became president. Stability has not returned to the country since.
