Satkhira newspaper editor GM Nur Islam dies

GM Nur Islam, editor and publisher of Satkhira’s widely circulated newspaper Dainik Dristipat, has died while undergoing treatment for multiple illnesses. He breathed his last Thursday afternoon at Neuroscience Hospital in the capital.

His eldest son, Adam Shafiullah, said his father’s body was brought home Thursday night. The funeral prayers will be held after Friday’s Jumu’ah prayers, followed by burial.

GM Nur Islam had also served as president of the Satkhira District Citizens’ Rights and Development Coordination Committee.

He entered the media industry in the 1980s by founding Islam Traders, a company that distributed national and regional newspapers.

He then began his career in journalism as a correspondent for the Khulna-based daily Janmabhumi. His own newspaper, Dainik Dristipat, launched in 2000.

He remained the paper’s editor and publisher until the last day of his life.
