The home ministry has decided to form committees at every educational institution in the country to prevent drug use of all kinds and gambling. The decision was announced on Thursday morning in a notice signed by the ministry’s public relations officer, Foysal Hasan.
The initiative is meant to keep students away from harmful activities such as drug addiction and gambling and to ensure a healthy, safe environment at educational institutions, the notice said. It gave no details of how the committees will be formed, how many members they will have, or what their duties and activities will be.
Earlier, on June 30, instructions were issued to build a social movement against drug abuse and to make the work of the anti-drug committees already formed at educational institutions more active and visible, according to a letter from the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE). The letter said that, under the minutes of the seventh meeting of the education ministry’s advisory committee on law and order, held on June 17, it had been decided to step up publicity about the harm caused by drugs and to make the work of those committees more active and visible, so as to build a social movement against drugs that involves the public. Institutions were asked to take effective steps to put that decision into practice.
