A fire in Matlab Dakshin, Chandpur, has burned down the homes and kitchens of five families along with their belongings. Two people were reportedly injured while trying to put out the fire.
The fire broke out on Wednesday morning (September 23) in Machhuakhal village of Khadergaon union in the upazila.
Those affected are Md Jalal Jamaddar, Md Selim Jamaddar, Sufian Jamaddar, Kamrul Jamaddar and Manik Mia.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in Jalal’s house on Wednesday morning and quickly spread to the neighbouring houses and kitchens, burning furniture and other belongings. Locals rushed to the scene and tried to bring the fire under control, and the fire service later arrived and put it out.
“The fire burned down our houses,” Jalal said. “Five homes, five kitchens, gold jewellery, belongings — everything has burned. We have lost about 4 million taka. We have nothing left but the clothes we are wearing. Now we have nowhere to stay but under the open sky.”
Mehedi Hasan, station officer of the Matlab Dakshin fire service, said: “We rushed to the scene as soon as we got the news. The homes and kitchens of five families were burned, and two people were injured. One unit brought the fire under control after about an hour. It is initially believed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.”
