Despite one relief measure after another for loan defaulters, non-performing loans in the banking sector have risen abnormally. By the end of June, defaulted loans again surpassed 6 lakh crore taka. Defaulted loans had first crossed that threshold in September of last year.
According to Bangladesh Bank data, defaulted loans stood at 606,555 crore taka as of June 2026, or 32.78% of total disbursed credit.
At the end of March 2026, defaulted loans stood at 588,704 crore taka, or 32.26%. That means defaulted loans rose by 17,851 crore taka over three months.
In the first six months of this year, defaulted loans increased by 49,338 crore taka. Defaulted loans stood at 557,217 crore taka last December.
