Tongi West police station have arrested Ratul Sikder Omi, 22, the recently expelled president of Ward No. 51 Chhatra Dal in Gazipur’s Tongi, over an extortion case, after he was accused of making derogatory remarks about the prime minister. He was arrested along with an associate from Tongi’s Sataish area last Wednesday (September 16) morning.
The arrested Ratul Sikder Omi is the son of Reza Sikder of the Sataish area under Tongi West police station, and was president of the city’s Ward No. 51 Chhatra Dal unit. His associate, Raju Sheikh, 25, is the son of the late Shahid Sheikh of Khortail village in the same area.
Police said that a few months ago, over a road construction contract, he demanded money from a contractor by phone, and made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during the same call. He was arrested along with his associate in a case filed by the contracting firm over the extortion demand. It is learned that after the derogatory remarks about the prime minister and the extortion demand came to light, Chhatra Dal expelled Ratul Sikder Omi for violating party discipline.
Tongi West police station OC Arifur Rahman said the pair were arrested in the extortion case filed by the contracting firm and sent to court, and that operations are under way to arrest the remaining accused named in the case.
