Customers of Islami Bank have staged a sit-in in Chougachha, Jashore, demanding stability at the bank, security for customers’ deposits and transparency in how the bank is run. The protest was organised by the bank’s Conscious Customers’ Forum.
The programme was held at 11am on Thursday in front of Islami Bank’s Chougachha branch, organised by the Islami Bank Conscious Customers’ Forum, Chougachha, Jashore. Speakers on behalf of the customers included Maulana Azad Hossain, former councillor Abdur Rahman, Master Abdus Salam, Rabiul Islam, Abul Khair, assistant lecturer Dirajul Islam and Shahinur Rahman. A large number of customers from various walks of life, including women customers of the bank, took part.
The protesters put forward six demands: the removal of the chairman; the formation of an independent and full board of directors; the confiscation of S Alam’s shares and their return to the real owners; the renewal of experienced officials’ contracts and security of their jobs; action against those involved in broker rings; and a special tribunal to try irregularities at the bank and take legal action.
Leaders of the customers’ forum said Islami Bank is one of the country’s most important financial institutions. Effective steps are needed to ensure that the current crisis does not create uncertainty among customers about their deposits and that the bank’s normal operations and customer service continue, they said. They called for their demands to be considered quickly to ensure transparency and stability at the bank.
