The Ministry of Local Government has issued a notification appointing Dr Shahadat Hossain, mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), as its full-time administrator. He was appointed under section 4 of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The notification was issued on Sunday by the City Corporation-1 branch of the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Issued by order of the president, it was signed by Deputy Secretary Juwel Rana.
The notification says Dr Shahadat Hossain will serve as administrator until a new corporation is formed or until further orders. Under sub-section (3) of section 4 of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2026, he will exercise the powers and carry out the duties of the city corporation’s mayor, and will receive a monthly honorarium and other allowances under the rules.
Dr Shahadat Hossain, a former convener of the city unit of the BNP, had gone to court seeking cancellation of the results of the CCC election held on 27 January 2021. After the July mass uprising, the court declared him the winner in a verdict on 1 October 2024.
