A young man who suffered severe burns from an electric shock while picking chalta (elephant apple) from a tree in Madarganj, Jamalpur, has died.
Tawhid, 18, died at about 4am on Sunday (October 25) while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, after five days fighting for his life.
He was the son of Nurnobi of the Milon Bazar area in Koroichora union of the upazila.
According to local sources, on the morning of Tuesday (October 20) Tawhid went to the Chhalabanda area of Koroichora union to gather chalta to make pickle. While picking the fruit from a tree, he accidentally became entangled in a power line. Family members said about 70 percent of his body was burned in the electric shock.
Local people rescued him and took him to the Madarganj Upazila Health Complex. After first aid he was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital for better treatment, and when his condition worsened he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He died there early on Sunday after five days of treatment.
His relatives Shafiqul Islam Chhibol and Salauddin said most of Tawhid’s body had been burned in the electric shock. He was taken first to Madarganj, then to Jamalpur, and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died during treatment.
A pall of grief fell over relatives when his body reached the family home from Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. Preparations were then made for his burial.
Tawhid’s father Nurnobi, who has lost his only child, was overwhelmed with grief. “My son was badly injured by an electric shock while picking chalta,” he said. “To save him we took him first to Madarganj, then to Jamalpur, and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Even after five days of treatment we could not save him. Losing my son has left me with nothing. I ask everyone who hoped to see him get well to pray for him.”
Snehashis Roy, officer-in-charge of Madarganj Model Police Station, said police were sent to the scene after the news came in. The family applied to take the body without a post-mortem, and as they had no complaint, permission was given for the burial.
