A student at International Islamic University Chittagong was killed and 10 people were injured in a collision involving a container lorry and a minibus in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
The crash occurred outside the university gate in Kumira at about 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3.
Police identified the student as 21-year-old Maisha Musfirat, a second-semester English student and the daughter of Sakhawat Hossain of Baratakia in Mirsharai’s Khaiyachhara union.
After news of her death spread, students blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway and an adjacent railway line, demanding justice, road discipline and compensation in a six-point charter.
The blockade remained in place after repeated meetings through 4 p.m., creating severe congestion over about 30 kilometers on both sides of the highway.
Highway police, citing witnesses, said a Dhaka-bound container lorry swerved to avoid a private car making a sudden turn near the university gate.
The lorry struck a stationary Dhaka-bound No. 8 Transport minibus from behind and overturned.
Two university students who had stepped off the bus were struck, while eight to 10 passengers inside were injured.
The injured were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and other hospitals. Doctors declared Maisha dead in the emergency department.
The blockade trapped thousands of vehicles and forced railway authorities to change the schedules of several trains.
University professor Mostafa Monir Chowdhury said two English students were injured and that all classes and examinations were canceled for the day.
Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost chief Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam Ashik confirmed that several injured people were brought to the hospital and Maisha was declared dead.
Highway police removed the overturned lorry and damaged bus. Police said legal procedures were under way before the body would be handed to the family.
Students continued the blockade after announcing demands for road discipline, accountability for the student’s death and appropriate compensation.
Officials held repeated meetings with the protesters but had not cleared the blockade by the time of the report.
Traffic stopped on the Dhaka-bound side and congestion spread toward Chattogram. Police remained at the scene to persuade students to leave the highway.
Bar Aulia Highway Police Sergeant Shafiul Islam Shuvo said officers removed the overturned lorry and damaged bus and took them to the station.
