Repentance and seeking forgiveness hold a central place in Islamic teaching. Believers are encouraged to return to God after wrongdoing and ask sincerely for mercy.

A hadith narrated by Anas ibn Malik says God forgives those who continue to pray and hope for mercy, regardless of the extent of their sins, provided they do not associate partners with Him.

The teaching calls on believers not to despair but to repent and seek forgiveness.

One traditional supplication asks forgiveness from God, affirming that there is no deity but Him, the Ever-Living and Sustainer, and declaring repentance to Him. A hadith says sincere recitation brings forgiveness even for serious wrongdoing.

Another prayer, known as Sayyid al-Istighfar, acknowledges God as Lord and Creator, affirms the believer’s covenant, recognizes divine blessings and personal sins, and asks forgiveness from the One who alone forgives sins.

A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari says a believer who recites it with conviction during the day and dies before evening, or recites it at night and dies before morning, will be among the people of Paradise.

The teaching concludes that remorse is the expiation of sin and that sincere remorse is repentance.

The accounts are attributed to collections including Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Jami al-Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad, al-Darimi, al-Hakim, al-Tabarani and Taliq al-Raghib.
