NETRAKONA — A sudden surge in dog attacks in Kendua upazila and municipality of Netrakona district left at least 20 people injured in a single day Sunday, with most victims children and teenagers under 15, locals said.
Residents said most of the dogs roaming the area are fully grown and have been attacking pedestrians without provocation in many cases. The attacks have spread alarm among residents, with parents now afraid to let children go outside alone.
Victims complained that stray dogs are not a new problem, but the situation has worsened sharply in recent days. They said no visible action has been taken by the administration so far.
Kawsar Talukder, a local journalist who was bitten by a dog, said: “I was walking along a road in the municipal town when a dog suddenly attacked and injured me badly. Later I went to the upazila hospital but couldn’t get a vaccine. I had to buy one at an inflated price. The municipality urgently needs to act. The hospital must also keep enough vaccine in stock.”
Mohammad Rifatul Islam, Kendua upazila nirbahi officer and municipal administrator, said the dog problem had been discussed before. “Necessary steps will be taken very soon,” he said. He also urged people to move with caution.
Victims of dog bites are facing additional hardship over treatment. Kendua Upazila Health Complex has run out of anti-rabies vaccine, forcing patients to buy doses at high prices on the open market, even though the vaccine is supposed to be supplied free of charge at district and upazila health facilities across the country.
Concerned residents are demanding immediate free supply of anti-rabies vaccine in Kendua and effective measures to control the dog population.
