NETROKONA — An indigenous day laborer whose family had given up hope after he was diagnosed with total kidney failure has returned home after a successful transplant, with one kidney donated by his mother and the medical costs paid by his local member of parliament.

Krishna Hajong, a resident of Bijoypur village in Durgapur upazila of Netrokona district, was discharged from hospital Wednesday following months of treatment, his family said.

The transplant and related care were funded by Barrister Kaiser Kamal, deputy speaker of parliament and the MP for the Netrokona-1 constituency that covers Kalmakanda and Durgapur upazilas.

Hajong, the sole earner for his parents, wife and young daughter, learned suddenly last year that both his kidneys had failed. The family sought treatment first in Mymensingh and then in Dhaka, exhausting their savings. Unable to continue dialysis, he returned home in late May last year, his family said.

Kamal, then legal affairs secretary of the BNP central committee, learned of the case and took over the cost of treatment, the family said. Under his supervision, Hajong began renewed treatment and dialysis at Bangladesh Medical University, formerly known as PG Hospital, on June 18.

Doctors told the family a transplant was the only option, according to the family. Hajong’s mother volunteered to donate one of her kidneys, they said.

After eight months of treatment and testing, the operation was carried out at Bangladesh Medical University on March 2 and was successful, the family said. Kamal covered all costs and oversaw the process throughout, they added.

Hajong was discharged Wednesday. Kamal visited the hospital, where Hajong’s mother raised her hands in blessing, the family said.

“I stood by Krishna Hajong out of a sense of human responsibility,” Kamal said. “I have followed every step of his treatment. Everything has gone well. I ask everyone to pray that Krishna recovers fully and can support his family again.”
