NETRAKONA — A dispute over inadequate meat portions at a wedding reception in Mohanganj upazila of Netrakona district triggered a brawl between the bride’s and groom’s families, leaving at least 15 people injured, including the bride’s younger sister.
The incident took place Tuesday afternoon at Utiarkona village in Samaj Sahildeo Union of the upazila, according to local accounts.
Kawsar Mia, 22, son of Sabuj Mia of Utiarkona village, married the daughter of Mohammad Abdul Hekim of nearby Medi Patharkata village last Monday. The next afternoon, members of the bride’s family arrived at the groom’s home for the reception.
During the meal, members of the bride’s party complained that they had been served meager portions of meat and that the rice smelled foul. The complaints led to an argument that escalated into a physical altercation, injuring at least 15 people from both sides.
Speaking on Wednesday, the groom’s father, Sabuj Mia, said he had spent 140,000 taka (about $1,200) on the reception. “While the meal was being served, people from the bride’s family picked a needless argument with our side and then started throwing punches indiscriminately,” he said. “I spent so much money on this wedding, and their behavior ruined the whole event.”
Golam Mostafa, an uncle of the bride, called the incident isolated and “deeply shameful.”
Mohammad Hafizul Islam Harun, officer-in-charge of Mohanganj police station, said his office had not received any formal complaint about the brawl. He said an investigation and action would follow if a complaint was filed.
