PABNA — A 60-year-old day laborer took his own life in Santhia upazila of Pabna district under the pressure of loans, police said.
Khaybar Ali died Thursday morning, police said. He was the son of the late Haran Uddin from Ikorjana village in Gourigram union of the upazila and worked as a day laborer.
According to local and family sources, Khaybar Ali had taken about 300,000 to 400,000 taka in loans from various NGOs. He was under pressure both from household expenses and from NGOs demanding loan installments and was unable to repay them.
He left home Wednesday night around 10 p.m. after eating dinner and did not return. Around 6 a.m. Thursday, residents found him at the edge of a pond in Kanabil, beside Ikorjana village. They informed police and his family. Police visited the scene.
Abdul Majid, a member of Ward 6 of Gourigram union, said Khaybar Ali worked in farming and as a day laborer. He was poor and in debt, Majid said, and may have acted out of despair during the night. Arrangements for burial were made after consultation with the family and police.
Abdul Latif, the inspector for investigations at Santhia police station, confirmed the incident and said officers had visited the scene. He said it was believed that Khaybar Ali had taken his own life because of poverty and debt. The family had not filed any complaint, he said. An unnatural death case has been filed at the police station.
