Two people have been killed when the rear boundary wall of Mirpur University College in the capital collapsed. At least six people were injured. The accident happened in the Love Road-Mandir Road area on Tuesday afternoon during a sale of TCB goods.

One of those killed was Nasima Begum, a resident of the nearby Janata Housing area. A man of about 40 also died; his name and identity are not known.

Eyewitnesses said people were standing in a long queue beside the college wall to collect TCB goods. The rear boundary wall of the college then suddenly collapsed. Several men and women were buried under it. Local people began rescue work immediately. Police and fire service members later reached the scene, rescued the injured and sent them to various hospitals. Nasima Begum was declared dead by doctors after being taken to the Pangu Hospital. A man was later declared dead at Dhaka Medical. Another woman is under treatment there in a serious condition.

The deputy commissioner of the police’s Mirpur division, Mostak Sarkar, said seven or eight people were buried when the wall collapsed onto the footpath. Two of them, including a woman, died after being rescued and taken to hospital. It has not been confirmed, however, whether they had come to collect TCB goods. The TCB goods were being sold on the road, he said, and people had crowded there, while others were also passing along the footpath. Two people who were on the footpath died when the wall collapsed. The investigation will establish the position, he said.
