MAGURA — Five workers were burned when a chemical overflowed while being poured at an automated rice mill in the Alokdia area of Magura Sadar, officials said.

The accident occurred at Amena Auto Rice Mill in Alokdia on Saturday, Oct. 11, at midday.

The injured were identified as Mohammad Shipan, 45, of Tangail district; Sabuj, 32, and Shahin Hossain, 20, of Faridpur district; Anukul, 24, of Joypurhat; and Rezwan, 38, of Binodpur village in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura. They were quickly rescued and admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.

Dr. Imran Ahmed of the hospital’s emergency department said the victims had suffered severe burns. Two of them were in critical condition, and all were under close observation, he said.

Juyel Sheikh, a co-worker, said the chemical used at the mill had to be changed periodically. “While the chemical was being poured at midday Saturday, it suddenly overflowed and fell on them,” he said. “We quickly rushed in, rescued them all and brought them to Magura Sadar Hospital.”

Magura Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Ayub Ali said police had visited the scene after being informed of the accident and had also checked on the burn victims at the hospital.

No comment was available from the mill authorities.
