MAGURA — About 100 male and female garment workers fell ill from panic during Friday’s earthquake at a factory in Magura’s Sreepur upazila, officials said.
The incident occurred at Style Smith Sun Apparels Ltd. in Amtail village of Sreepur upazila during the earthquake on Friday, Nov. 21.
Panic spread among garment workers when the quake struck. Workers on the second floor fled the building and rushed onto the road in fear for their lives. Many female workers became dizzy and vomited, then fell ill. They were quickly sent from the factory to the Sreepur upazila health complex. The number of sick patients grew as time passed.
Twenty of those who fell ill were admitted to the upazila health complex. Many others were released after primary treatment. Another 28 sick workers were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.
Dr. Mamunur Rashid, resident medical officer at the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital, said the workers had fallen ill after losing consciousness from panic during the earthquake at the Sreepur garment factory. “They are all well now,” he said, but added that they remain under observation.
Samsur Rahman, Magura Sreepur upazila fire station officer, said: “As soon as the 5.5-magnitude earthquake was felt around 10:30 a.m., we went to rescue the garment workers after receiving the news. Many workers fell ill there from panic. Later, locals and fire service members rescued them and took them to the Sreepur 50-bed health complex and the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital.”
