Ahmed Shahriar Reza Deep, described as a younger associate who was with former air force officer K M Tahsif Sauri, has given investigators a new account of the events that ended with Tahsif’s body being found floating in the Turag river.

Under questioning by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Deep said the two of them were talking near Rajabari ghat on the day of the incident. When several men chased them, Tahsif jumped into the river to save his life and Deep ran away from the spot.

Investigators have treated Deep as the prime suspect from the start. He was picked up from a house in Mohammadpur on Thursday night.

Separately, police have recovered a motorcycle without number plates that Tahsif used, from the Mazar slum area of Tongi, about three kilometres from where his body was found.

PBI chief Additional Inspector General of Police Mostafa Kamal said Deep’s statement and the recovered motorcycle were being examined closely. The PBI is giving the river police full support to uncover what actually happened, he said.

Tahsif’s body was recovered from the Turag on Wednesday afternoon. His father says he was murdered.
