Israel blocks Gaza child amputees from treatment abroad

Gaza has only eight certified prosthetics specialists, and the WHO says fewer than a quarter of amputees assessed since September 2024 have received permanent limbs.

Israel is preventing children who have lost limbs in the besieged Gaza Strip from being taken abroad for treatment, the rights group Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has alleged.

The group says Israel’s restrictions on travel are denying hundreds of children the chance to go abroad for treatment.

In a report published on Wednesday (November 4), the group said 1,134 children in Gaza have lost hands or legs in Israeli attacks, and that very few of them are receiving the long-term care they need.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2,300 amputees in Gaza, children and adults, were assessed for treatment between September 2024 and May 2026.

Only 500 of them have received permanent prosthetic limbs, fewer than one in four.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said Gaza now has only eight certified specialists trained in prosthetics and orthotics.

The report says Gaza lacks the equipment needed to make, fit, maintain and adjust artificial limbs.

“Continuing to deny children treatment, rehabilitation and suitable education risks turning their present physical injuries into lifelong deprivation,” the group warned.

Without continuous medical follow-up, and without prosthetic limbs being changed as children grow, new complications, chronic pain and greater difficulty moving can follow.

Child amputees go without care

Fida Ahmed al-Shaer, 36, told the rights group that a shell fired by Israeli forces exploded near her 11-year-old son. He was paralysed and lost an arm.

The boy needs several operations abroad and an artificial limb, but with the border crossings closed he cannot be taken out of Gaza.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has accused Israel of war crimes. “Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of a group, in whole or in part, is among the crimes listed in Article II of the Genocide Convention,” the group said.

“The amputation of children and the obstruction of their treatment and rehabilitation are part of this pattern,” it added.

The group also alleges that Israel is blocking imports of the equipment needed to make prosthetic limbs in Gaza, and that by refusing entry to specialist doctors and technicians it is hampering both the training of local staff and the delivery of care.
