Farmers scuffled and clashed at a dealer’s shop in Naldanga municipality, Natore, after failing to get fertiliser despite standing in long queues, and over alleged irregularities in its distribution. The incident created tension, and police were quickly deployed to prevent disorder.
The incident took place from morning until midday on Thursday (November 5) during fertiliser distribution at M/S Shyamsundar Agarwala’s shop in Naldanga municipality.
Local farmers allege that demand for fertiliser is at its peak in the current Boro and Rabi season, yet because the dealer’s shop lacks enough supply and because of irregularities, they are going home empty-handed after standing in line for hours. Many who queued from before dawn got no fertiliser, and their farming is suffering.
The farmers further alleged that while they wait in the queue for a long time, others go to the front through the back way or with tokens and take fertiliser. Genuine farmers return without fertiliser even when they hold tokens, while some people who farm nothing leave with vans full of it. They called on the authorities to supervise distribution properly so that genuine farmers get the fertiliser they need.
As the situation worsened, the upazila agriculture office and Naldanga police station reached the spot after quick intervention by the local administration. They calmed the angry farmers and restored orderly distribution. The situation is now under police control.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabuj Ali, an agriculturist, said there is no shortage of fertiliser in the area. Supervision has been stepped up so that no artificial shortage is created and dealers distribute fertiliser to farmers properly and in an orderly way.
Advising farmers not to panic, he added that adequate supplies of fertiliser will be ensured in every area in turn.
