Yemen’s Houthis have demanded $51 billion in compensation from Saudi Arabia as an initial condition for ending the war, The Wall Street Journal has reported. The report says they are seeking the money as compensation for years of air strikes and blockade.

They have also demanded that Saudi Arabia formally recognise Ansar Allah as the rulers of Yemen.

According to the report, Riyadh contacted the Houthis after their attacks on Aramco facilities, the East-West pipeline, King Khalid International Airport and tankers in the Red Sea, and after they seized territory around the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The Houthis say the $51 billion is sought for the damage caused by Saudi attacks and the long blockade. Although the figure has been discussed, the amount needed for a settlement remains in the range of a few billion dollars, the report says.
