The government has moved to bring teachers and staff at MPO-listed institutions under the new national pay scale, Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said, adding that they would be included in the structure very soon. He did not say when the new pay structure would take effect.

The minister made the announcement on his verified Facebook page on Sunday.

The government took the step to secure teachers’ finances, improve their benefits and respond to a long-standing demand, according to sources. The announcement has raised hopes among MPO-listed teachers and staff, but uncertainty remains over when the higher pay will begin.

More than 600,000 teachers and staff across the country are currently on the MPO list, under which the government pays a monthly salary subsidy to non-government institutions. About 400,000 of them come under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, about 175,000 under the Directorate of Madrasah Education and more than 23,000 under the Directorate of Technical Education.

Once the new structure takes effect, their basic pay and house rent allowance will rise. Teachers’ pay grades differ according to the type of institution, the level and the subject taught. Under the new structure, each will be paid according to their own service grade.

The finance ministry brought the new pay structure into effect for government employees from July 1. After the circular was issued, government employees received three months of arrears along with their October salaries. The process of applying the new structure to MPO-listed teachers and staff is still pending.
