Bangladesh has launched an initiative that uses discarded plastic bottles for farming as a way to address pollution. Meghna Group of Industries is running the plastic-farming project as part of its social responsibility and environmental work.
Discarded bottles were first collected from different water bodies. Floating beds were then made from the bottles, filled with soil and compost, and used to plant seeds.
After about two years of research, the project was implemented with landless farmers in Tungipara of Gopalganj and Pirojpur. Under the supervision of upazila agriculture offices, officials taught local landless farmers how to use the method.
The project also prepared video tutorials and a website to teach plastic farming in villages. As a result, 2,100 farmers in 20 villages began using the method and successfully produced winter vegetables through their own efforts.
People involved in the project hope it will reduce plastic pollution, increase crop production, strengthen food security and improve the lives of landless farmers.
