British politician Jeremy Corbyn has called the US-led “war on terror” disastrous, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
In a post on Facebook, Corbyn wrote: “Today marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11. We remember all those who lost their lives and those whose lives were shattered that day. We also pay tribute to the bravery of the emergency service workers, many of whom are still fighting illness today and campaigning for their right to healthcare.”
He said what followed was a disastrous “war on terror” that killed hundreds of thousands of people, pushed many more into extreme poverty, fuelled a wave of Islamophobia, and set off an endless cycle of conflict, hatred and suffering.
He said Britain had followed the US-led process blindly. The world is still living with the consequences of that disastrous decision, he said, yet no accountability has ever been secured for the deaths and destruction it caused.
Corbyn said the lesson of history must be learned today — recognising that war is not the answer, ending the horrors of occupation, and working to build a world of peace and harmony for all.
