A mobile court in Madan, Netrokona, has fined butcher Parvez Mia 10,000 taka over allegations of selling meat from diseased cattle.
Madan upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate Nadir Hossain Shamim imposed the fine under the consumer rights law on Thursday morning (September 24) in the Dewan Bazar area of Madan municipality.
Upazila livestock officer Mahbub Alam, police ASI Zakir Hossain, local journalists and community leaders were present. A market is held every Thursday at Madan’s long-established Dewan Bazar, and Parvez Mia and several others have been accused of slaughtering sick cattle and selling the meat there every week. On Wednesday night (September 23), Parvez Mia tried to slaughter a sick cow. Concerned locals noticed and stopped him.
Local journalists then learned of it and posted a video of the cow on social media, and angry residents informed the administration. The executive magistrate and UNO, Nadir Hossain Shamim, went to the scene and fined the butcher 10,000 taka.
“We rushed to the scene on receiving the news and found a diseased cow,” UNO Nadir Hossain Shamim said. “The meat kept in his shop had also not been inspected by the livestock department. So a butcher named Parvez Mia has been fined 10,000 taka under the consumer rights law and warned for the future.”
