India and Uzbekistan have signed a long-term uranium agreement. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the deal Sunday, after a meeting with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent.
Emphasis was also placed on developing an action plan to implement three sister-city and sister-state agreements. Modi also proposed drawing on the experience of India’s GIFT City in Gujarat for the construction of Uzbekistan’s new city, “New Tashkent.”
Mirziyoyev said bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $1 billion for the first time last year, and that direct flights have increased to 14 a week.
He also announced a visa-free travel initiative for Indian citizens, allowing stays of up to 30 days. Alongside trade, investment, education, pharmaceuticals, information technology and culture, cooperation between the two countries is now also expanding in nuclear energy and urban development.
