Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain has claimed that a “silent struggle” is underway between Pakistan’s military establishment and President Asif Ali Zardari. He also warned that the debate over forming new provinces could push Pakistan toward a major political and security crisis.
In a video message, Altaf Hussain said Pakistan is heading toward what he described as the country’s “most dangerous stage,” claiming that ordinary people are still unaware of the potential risks involved.
He claimed the current tensions are linked to discussions over the proposed 28th constitutional amendment, alleging that the amendment could include provisions for forming new provinces.
“The formation of new provinces should never be taken lightly,” Altaf Hussain said, arguing that the issue could have far broader consequences for the country’s political and security situation.
His remarks come amid renewed debate over the possibility of forming new provinces in Pakistan and the political implications of such constitutional changes.
Altaf Hussain alleged that a rift has emerged between President Asif Ali Zardari and the military establishment over the proposed constitutional changes. Citing reports that the Sindh provincial assembly is moving to pass a resolution opposing the formation of a new province in Sindh, he described it as evidence of a “silent war” between Zardari and the military establishment.
He further alleged that Pakistan’s political leadership is also divided on the issue, and criticized the fact that both President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are currently abroad.
Altaf’s comments on the military leadership
Altaf Hussain also claimed the proposed 28th amendment has the backing of the broader military establishment, arguing it would be wrong to view the entire matter as centered solely on Field Marshal Asim Munir.
He said major decisions are not made unilaterally by the army chief, but collectively by the military leadership. He also voiced concern that the military establishment could impose martial law and install a caretaker government to pave the way for passing the constitutional amendment.
The MQM founder warned that if the conflict over forming new provinces intensifies further, it could create a “war-like situation” in Sindh.
He warned that if the situation worsens, it could lead to conflict between Pakistan’s military and the Sindhi people, and could also strengthen calls for an independent “Sindhudesh.”
Separately, Altaf Hussain called for Balochistan to be handed over to the Baloch people, warning that continuing violence in the province could escalate into a broader civil conflict.
