After Israeli shelling in Gaza, a six-storey building collapsed onto displaced people inside it and others who had taken shelter in a nearby tent. Around 100 people remain missing following the incident, according to Gaza’s health ministry director-general, Munir al-Bursh.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, he said that, based on information from relatives, more than 75 people have so far been listed as missing, of whom around 50 are children.
Al-Bursh further said that around 2,000 buildings across Gaza are currently at risk of collapsing at any moment. Noting that rescue workers are operating with inadequate and limited resources, he said they lack the heavy equipment needed to clear heavy concrete slabs and rescue people trapped under the rubble. “We are fighting a merciless battle against time, and every moment means the end of another precious life,” he said. He added that cries and pleas for help can still be heard from beneath the rubble.
