A young man named Araj Ali, 30, has died after being struck by lightning while sitting beside a beel near his home in Kushtia’s Doulatpur. The incident took place around 1:15pm on Thursday (September 17) in Narayanpur village, Rifaitpur union, of the upazila.
The deceased, Araj Ali, was the son of Abdur Razzak of Narayanpur village, Rifaitpur union. Local sources said dark clouds began gathering over Doulatpur’s sky after noon on Thursday. At one point, heavy rain began along with loud thunder. Araj Ali was sitting beside a beel near his home at the time. A sudden, loud bolt of lightning struck him, leaving him critically injured. Hearing the sound of the lightning strike, people nearby rushed to the scene and rescued him. He was then taken in critical condition to Doulatpur upazila health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Doulatpur upazila health and family planning officer Dr Touhidul Hasan Tuhin said a person named Araj Ali was brought to the hospital around 2pm on Thursday, but he had already died before reaching the hospital. Doulatpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Khalidur Rahman said initial investigation found he died from a lightning strike. The victim’s body has been recovered.
