A man named Hazrat Ali is accused of stabbing his wife, Nilufa Akter Milu, 40, to death in Nagarpur, Tangail, after receiving her notice of divorce, and then attempting to take his own life. Nilufa’s mother, who came forward, was also stabbed and injured.
The incident took place at about 8pm on Wednesday (September 23) in Bade Kakna village of Dhubaria union in the upazila.
The accused, Hazrat, lives in Dahar Pachuria village in Dhubaria. Nilufa was the daughter of Chhoinuddin of neighbouring Kakna village.
Citing local and family sources, police said Hazrat and Nilufa married about six years ago and had quarrelled constantly since. As a result, Nilufa divorced Hazrat a week ago. Enraged at the news, Hazrat went to Nilufa’s home with a sharp knife at about 8pm on Wednesday and stabbed her as soon as he saw her. She died on the spot, police said.
When Nilufa’s mother, Chenbanu, came forward, she too was stabbed and injured. Hazrat then turned the knife on himself and collapsed. Locals rescued Hazrat and Chenbanu in a critical condition and took them to Daulatpur upazila health complex.
“I was at the market,” said Nilufa’s father, Chhoinuddin. “When I got the news I went home and found my daughter and Hazrat lying on the floor covered in blood.”
Dr Mousumi Bhowmik, medical officer at Daulatpur upazila health complex, said Hazrat and Chenbanu were brought in with serious wounds. Because of heavy bleeding, they were given first aid and sent to Manikganj Medical College Hospital that night. According to police, Hazrat, whose condition was critical, was then taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and Chenbanu to CMH in Dhaka for better treatment.
“The body has been recovered and sent for a post-mortem,” said Nagarpur police station officer-in-charge Zahurul Islam. “The victim’s father has filed a murder case. The husband is being treated in police custody.”
