Union Parishad polls in 80 upazilas set for Nov 12

The Election Commission plans to hold Union Parishad elections in seven phases. The first phase of voting has tentatively been set for November 12.

Election commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah gave reporters this information after a commission meeting on Monday.

He said a preparatory meeting was held on local government Union Parishad elections. The country has a total of 4,580 union parishads, where elections will be held in seven phases.

Under the EC’s preliminary plan, voting in the first phase would take place on November 12. The second phase could be held on December 13, and the third on December 30. Voting in the fourth phase has been tentatively set for January 17 next year, the fifth for February 4, the sixth for April 22, and the seventh for May 27.

The election commissioner said local government elections could begin with Union Parishad elections in 80 upazilas in the first phase, though he stressed these remain preliminary decisions.

He added that discussions on the local government elections would be held with all registered political parties in the country.
